 2012-2013 Position Openings:

Administrator

 Early Childhood Teacher

The White Mountain Waldorf School celebrates its 28th year of operation with the 2012-2013 school year.  Our school has grown from one Kindergarten to our present size on our 75-acre wooded campus, which serves over 115 children with 27 dynamic and dedicated faculty members. Our school has a well established Early Childhood program for children 2-6 years of age, a strong aftercare program and a growing Elementary program, with a warm, supportive community of families from 20 surrounding towns in New Hampshire and Maine.

The school is located in the Mount Washington Valley, an area of incredible natural beauty.  Bordering on the 700,000 acre White Mountain National Forest, the community is valued by many outdoor enthusiasts who hike, bike, ski, and rock climb.  The valley supports a rural, small town lifestyle.  There is also easy access to city life with Portland, Maine, 1¼ hours to the east and Boston 2½ hours south. Our extended Waldorf community consists of an Anthroposophical study group, with members throughout the valley, a bio-dynamic farm and a  Community Supported Agriculture group, choral and instrumental groups, and many local opportunities for meditation, yoga, dance, painting and drawing, drama and natural health care.

All positions require an understanding of Waldorf Philosophy and/or a willingness to learn and work using Waldorf methods.  Education requirements are a Bachelors degree in addition to Waldorf teacher training.  To apply, please send a letter of application, contact information for three references from people familiar with your work, and a short autobiography with your resume. Please email or mail your information to the attention of Dawn Hensley-Buzzell, Full Faculty Chair at info@whitemountainwaldorf.org, or toWhite MountainWaldorfSchool,PO Box 1069,Conway,NH03818. At theWhite MountainWaldorfSchool, we believe that the play of the young child is supported and developed by the adult activity in the environment.  Therefore, the early childhood teacher creates a naturally rich environment worthy of imitation-a world in which a child can construct and transform, and in which s/he can engage directly with the world in an atmosphere of purposeful activity.  The teacher’s consciousness is always embracing the children, fully attentive to the task before him/her, and two steps ahead-anticipating the children’s needs.  While there are many ways to interact-some teachers are quiet, some laugh easily, some sing most of the time, and some engage the children in a moderate amount of friendly conversation-the teacher and assistant provide a backdrop for unselfconscious play through their attentiveness to the moment and the tasks before them.  Idle chatter between adults has no place in the classroom. The teacher’s hands are always busy-whether cooking, repairing a toy, sewing a puppet, or crafting new benches out of wood.  But the children come first!  Our hands are always available to help and comfort, as well.  The most important task of the teacher is regular transformative work.  We can make what we need.  This provides the child with the security that the world is controllable, the world is good.  The Early Childhood Lead Teacher will carry the following responsibilities:
  • Developing and implementing an appropriate daily, weekly and yearly rhythm.
  • Being at school from 7:30am to 2:45pm or later, depending on meeting schedules.
  • Preparing lesson plans, teaching space, and materials for daily teaching.
  • Bringing a rich artistic life to the classroom through the use of song, movement, storytelling, puppetry, and painting as a minimum.
  • Bringing a rich practical life to the classroom through gardening, cooking, sewing, and woodworking and caring for and developing the classroom and outdoor environment.
  • Caring for the children’s well being:  physically, emotionally, and socially.
  • Helping with the transition to the aftercare program.
  • Parent, Administrative and Communicative work
